Remote monitoring for welfare units and site cabins

A welfare unit with flat batteries or a generator that has stopped means no heat, light or hot water for the site team — and an urgent call to the hire desk. TrackSyte® monitors the battery, solar and generator power on every welfare unit and site cabin, so you see problems coming and plan refuelling and visits instead of reacting to them.

Neo 2 runs from the unit's 12V or 24V supply (9–30 V DC), works with Victron equipment, the Victron Smart Shunt and smart lithium batteries, reads supported generator controllers over Modbus, and has GNSS fitted as standard.

Why welfare units generate so many call-outs

Modern eco welfare units run on batteries charged by solar panels, with a small generator that starts when the batteries run low. That cuts fuel use dramatically, but it adds things that can quietly stop working: a battery bank that is not being recharged, a generator that has run out of fuel or failed to start, or solar that cannot keep up in winter.

On most fleets the first anyone hears of it is a phone call from site. The hire desk then sends someone out, often to find the fix was a fuel top-up that could have been planned, or a reset that could have been done earlier.

What you can see for each welfare unit

Depending on the power system fitted, TrackSyte shows:

ReadingWhy it matters
Battery state of charge and voltageKnow when a unit is heading for a flat battery
Solar chargingSee whether solar is keeping up, especially in winter
Generator running status and alarmsKnow the generator started when it should, or why it did not
Fuel level, where the controller publishes itPlan refuelling rounds instead of emergency deliveries
LocationConfirm which site each unit is on, and find units at off-hire
Shock and movementKnow when a unit has been struck or moved

Plan refuelling and visits from the office

With every unit's battery and generator status in one portal, a hire desk can see which units need fuel this week, which have a charging problem, and which are fine. Alerts with critical, warning and information levels go out by email, webhook or Slack, so the person who can act hears first — not the site manager who has just lost power.

Fewer emergency visits and smarter refuelling rounds are where the savings come from. Use the site visit calculator to estimate yours.

Works with the power systems already fitted

Most eco welfare units use Victron inverters and chargers, a battery monitor or smart lithium batteries, and a generator with its own controller. Neo 2 reads Victron equipment and the Smart Shunt directly, reads supported generator controllers over RS485 / Modbus, and can pick up simple signals such as a generator-running contact through its digital inputs.

One view of the whole hire fleet

Welfare units usually go out alongside lighting towers, CCTV towers, generators and pumps — often to the same customer. TrackSyte puts them all in the same portal, so the hire desk manages one fleet rather than several systems.

FAQs

What can be monitored on a welfare unit?

Battery state of charge and voltage, solar charging, generator running status and alarms, fuel level where the controller publishes it, location, and shock or movement. What is available depends on the power system fitted.

Does it work on eco or solar welfare units?

Yes. Those are where it helps most, because the battery, solar and generator all need to work together. Neo 2 works with Victron equipment, the Smart Shunt and smart lithium batteries.

How do alerts reach the hire desk?

Alert rules send email, webhook or Slack notifications for low battery, generator faults, loss of connection and similar events, with critical, warning and information levels.

Can I see where my welfare units are?

Yes. Neo 2 has GNSS fitted as standard, so each unit's location and history sit alongside its power data — useful for site checks and off-hire collection.

Can manufacturers fit it at the factory?

Yes. Neo 2 can be fitted during manufacture so every unit leaves the factory connected. See our page for manufacturers.
